Hello, and welcome to your Messy Rebel Pep Talk. My hope is that this finds you when you need it the most and it will give you a boost of confidence, remind you that the world needs you exactly as you are, and above all, makes you feel less alone. So chances are that you'll listen to this and you feel a bit like a square peg in a round hole. And chances are you're frustrated either by people who just don't get you and why you do the things you do and why you do the things the way you do them. Or you're frustrated at yourself, wondering why things can feel so hard. Or your inner dream shitter is giving you a really fucking hard time. So I wanna take some time to remind you that you do not have to be some shiny and new improved version of yourself, and who you already are is more than okay. Now I am speaking to you as a fellow Messi rebel, and I know that we are only too good at giving ourselves a really hard time.
We tend to have a 1,000,000 tabs open both literally and also in our brains. We often have more ideas than we have time and energy to do them. And we're sick of explaining to other people and even to ourselves that we don't rebel because we wanna be different. It's just a case that the world makes sense to us in our own way, we live on our own terms, and run of the mill solutions just don't tend to work with us. Now all that being said, one of the things I think we tend to forget as messy rebels is that in order to create a life that works for us, we have come up with our own systems and we do finish things. It's just that it doesn't look the same as other people's processes. What might look like chaos from the outside really does make a lot of sense to us, and I think we can waste so much time trying to explain to other people why we work the way we do and almost justifying ourselves. And I wonder how much energy we would save if we remembered that we don't owe anybody an explanation as to who we are and why we are the way we are.
The truth is that we tend to stand out because we tend to do things differently, and that can sometimes make us feel like an outsider or like we're doing something wrong. But you, my dear, are doing nothing wrong. You have this fantastically creative brain that makes these connections between all these unseemingly unrelated things and all these rabbit holes that you go down, and your curiosity is such a strength. The amount of projects you started, whether you finish them or not, is testament to your fabulous imagination and problem solving skills. And that is something to be proud of, not ashamed of. Because we've only ever had experience of our brains, we tend to think that everybody finds it as easy as we do. Coming up with new stuff and getting excited about stuff and having all of these ideas. But trust me, it's really rare.
And not only do we have this amazing ability to come up with ideas, because of the wide breadth of things that we're interested in, they tend to be really unique and they have our own stamp on them whether we can see it or not. And that is the thing about your own magic. It is there whether you can put it into words or recognize it or not. Its existence does not rely on your ability to see it or recognize it. It is simply there, and it certainly does not go away when you're just not feeling it. And when you're not feeling it, which might be right now, it's really important to give yourself grace and to feel what you're feeling. Sometimes we feel unseen or misunderstood. And especially around here, we tend to be highly sensitive and very creative, that can feel like a really shitty place to be in.
So if that's what you're feeling right now, I really encourage you to go be with your people. And if that is in real life or online with friends that just really get you, then do that. But also know when I say go be with your people, I also mean read books about unconventional heroines. Go find the films where the messy rebels are. Go to your heroes and the people whose work that really inspires you, that resonates on a level that you can't quite explain, and go fill your own cup. The thing about being a messy rebel is we often feel almost trapped by our own potential because we can see so many of the things that we want to do, but it can be so hard to bring them to life. And I really do believe one of the reasons is because we're trying to fit into systems that other people have created that just weren't made for us. And we're getting caught in the having to finish things and everything having to be amazing.
But my dear, nothing is ever wasted. All of your projects and all the things you've worked on and your life so far is an accumulation of all the random shit you've done. And maybe you didn't finish projects because you simply reached the end of your enthusiasm. As Barbara Sher says, you got what you came for. Or maybe it led you to something even more interesting, and that's okay. And if you look back, you will see that you actually have finished things. It's just so much easier to think of all of the ghosts of projects past. You have come so far, and yet you may have quirky ways of getting shit done.
Your desk might be an absolute mess, or it might be really tidy and you've got a 1,000,000 different notebooks. And you might work really, really well during the last day of a deadline, and you might have a skill at winging it. So let's just recognize and celebrate your quirky brain for the quirky way it is and the magic that you have. Chances are if chances are if you're anything like me, you've spent so much time trying to do things the way you think you should do them. But you know by now that that just doesn't work for you, and that's not some innate fault. It's just that we do things differently. And when we can start leaning into that and leaning into who we are, life does start to get a little bit easier. Fuck being anybody else, because the world needs you exactly as who you are.
There is nothing wrong with you, my love. Remember that dream shittters are pretty much always projecting their own shit onto you and it's not even about you. And keep being your fabulous, glorious, unapologetic self. Your quirks and your weirdness make you who you are. They are brilliant, so own them. From one messy rebel to another, we need to start being a bit damn kinder to ourselves, recognize that some of the things that we think are our weaknesses are actually our strengths, and work with ourselves rather than against ourselves. So I hope this pep talk makes you feel a bit less alone. And if you found that helpful, there's more where they came from.
I started my podcast, The Daily Pep, because it was exactly what I needed. Reminders to keep going as somebody who often feels like a square peg in a round hole. And short and snappy, often sweary and sassy, reminders that it is more than okay to be your fabulous quirky self, that the world needs you the way you are, and a daily dose of bullshit free encouragement and rebel rousing. New episodes are released every weekday at 6AM UK time. There are now over 1,000 episodes. So if you fancy starting your morning with a compassionate bang or you need multiple pep talks to help you get out of bed, that is exactly what they're there for. And you can listen by looking up the daily pep in any podcast app or go into therebelrousers.com/dailypep. And know that every morning, you will be in the company of thousands of fellow rebels who really do get it.
I hope the rest of your day gets brighter, you find some unexpected joy, and you remember that everything changes when you believe you matter.
